The door bell rang. She heard her husband open the door. He did not invite the  caller in. Some words filtered into her ears...pitch dark...midnight....whole family. She imagined the worst.  The visitor left.  'He has invited us for Janamashtami celebration tomorrow midnight  with the whole family ' her husband said. No recipe today. Happy Fasting!

The wedding gift

It was the first morning of her honeymoon. She looked at the 6 piece bridal lingerie on the floor. Her friends knew what they were giving her alright! She giggled as she remembered the boutique owner's expression when they decided to try on one piece each from the set.  That and the recipe for Kuali with a twist. The perfect wedding gift. The 3 fish

There was no going out. Everything was in lockdown. He had sneaked out very early in the morning...when it was still dark. Four hours of being out in the sea and all he had caught were 3 pomfrets. He felt like putting them back in the water, but stopped himself. His wife was now in her seventh month and not eating well enough. He would make Lasooni pomfret for her. She could have two, he’d manage with one. Lasooni pomfret 1 small size pomfret (approx. 200 gm.) 1 tbsp. lemon juice 1 tsp. haldi 1 tsp. red chili powder 1 tsp. salt ½ tbsp. mustard sauce9 jp8bbsp ½ tbsp. refined oil ½ tbsp. butter 1 tbsp. minced garlic Clean pomfret & give 3-4 cuts on the skin on either side. the skype call

Image
She had moved to India 2 years back with her son but her husband chose to stay back in London. They would chat on Skype every night. But somehow she felt he was too comfortable in his forced bachelorhood to really miss her as much as she missed him. Tonight, she was making sure it was different. When his call got connected on Skype that night, he heard ..."ooooh "....."yeaaaahhhhh"...."mmmmm...this is so good"...."oh wow". He couldn't believe his eyes. With all his heart, he wished he could be there. She was having his favourite Perugu Chaaru...glass after chilled glass.         Perugu Chaaru In a  bowl take 1 cup yogurt, add salt to taste, 1/2 tbsp grated coconut/ dry coconut powder.  Mix them properly, then add 1.5 - 2 cups of water ( If you like it thin, add more water ). She rebooted her phone for the tenth time. Still no internet. There had been some violent protests in the state and the government had suspended internet services.   She couldn’t reach anyone and was almost panicking. When suddenly, she smiled. She, too, was out of reach. The ideal time to finish her painting and indulge in a Viennese Mocha. Viennese mocha Pour 2/3 oz thick choc syrup & ½ oz almond syrup into a glass. Add a shot of espresso. Fill with steamed milk . Top with frothed milk . Garnish with cinnamon .

Fishy tales

Image
“Bongs live on fish. What if they make me eat fish for breakfast?” exclaimed the bride to be. “Teach them to eat fish parathas,” replied her mother, slightly amused by the thought that despite her aversion to fish, the Bong groom was her daughter’s only choice. Fish paratha Fry 2-3 fish pcs lightly. Debone. Chop finely onions, ginger, garlic, dhania patta, & green chilli . Heat oil. Add onions, ginger & garlic. Stir till pink. Add roasted jeera powder & amchur. Mix well. Add fish & salt . Add 1 boiled potato (opt). Stuff tablespoons of mixture into regular paratha dough . Roll out circles and shallow fry till crisp and golden. Serve with onion rings, raita and green chutney.

Invitation.....

They were visiting his cousin in India. And typically everyone was asking him “kya khaoge .”At times she wished someone would ask her what she wanted to eat. It was always about his favorites. No worries. Didi would surely serve her mother in law’s trademark mutton curry – complete with alu. And she loved it as much as him, if not more. Sasuma’s mutton Heat mustard oil in the pressure cooker body. Fry potato cubes till golden brown, and drain. Add jeera & tejpatta. Stir & add mutton pcs.
